Hello my friends and welcome back for another service of Cowboy Church.
Today's musical selection begins with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with In the Sweet By and By. This song was written by Sanford Fillmore Bennett and Joseph P Webster. These two were long time friends and knew each other very well. Webster would often times have bouts of depression, something Bennett well knew. One time when Webster was depressed, Bennett said “Webster, what is the matter now?” To which Webster replied “It is no matter, it will be all right by and by.” Bennett said, “The Sweet By and By! Why would not that make a good hymn?" On that day in 1868 the two wrote the song in 30 minutes and began to sing it, with Webster lifted from his depression. This Roy Rogers and Dale Evans recording came from 1973. Next is Vince Gill and Sara Watkins singing the classic hymn, It is Well. This song was written by a man named Horatio G. Spafford. To say Spafford was going through a hard time when he wrote this song is an understatement. His son had passed away and his fortune had disappeared (he invested much of his money in real estate that was wiped out by the Chicago fire of 1878. He planned to take a trip with his wife and daughters, yet because of business reasons he was not able to go. His wife and daughter went by themselves on a boat trip, but the boat met with an accident and sunk. His wife had been saved but his daughters had not. It is often believed that he wrote this hymn when he was coming close to the place his daughters had sunk. With all that happened this song is an incredibly powerful statement and takes on a whole new meaning. It is only with God that a man who had just suffered so much could write a song that states, "It is well with my soul." This is followed by Tennessee Ernie Ford's version of Bringing in the Sheaves. This song was written by Knowles Shaw in 1874 and was dedicated to preacher and songwriter, Augustus Damon Fillmore. Next comes a little cowboy music fun with Pasty Montana preforming I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart in a clip from the Gene Autry movie, Colorado Sunset (1939). This is followed by The Charlie Daniels Band with an original gospel song, Somebody was Prayin' For Me. This comes from their first gospel album, 1997's Steel Witness, and was an original composition. This is followed by The Purple Hulls with No Power in the Water, from their 2012 album, Close to Home. Next comes the Sons of the Pioneers with their 1948 recording of Read the Bible Every Day. This song was written by one of the band's founding members, Tim Spencer. Today's musical selection ends with The Louvin Brothers with a 1951 live recording of The Family Who Prays.
