Hello my friends and welcome back for another service of Cowboy Church.
Today's musical selection with Tennessee Ernie Ford with Noah Found Grace in the Eyes of the Lord. This is followed by The Charlie Daniels Band with Power in the Blood. This hymn was written by Lewis Edgar Jones in 1889. The hymn first appeared in Songs of Praise and Victory in 1889 and then in Gospel Praises later the same year. Jones worked for the YMCA and held many jobs there over the years, but through it all writing hymns stayed a major hobby of his. Over the years he had written nearly 200 hymns, including I’ve Anchored in Jesus, The Old Book Stands and Lean on His Arms. Yet Power in the Blood remains his most popular and its message is still just as true and powerful today. The Charlie Daniel Band's version comes from their 2001 gospel album, How Sweet The Sound - 25 Favorite Hymns And Gospel Greats. This in my mind remains their best work of the 21st century. The musical fun continues with Omar Stiefer singing his own original Cowboy For Christ. Next is The Sons of the Pioneers with what may be their signature song, Tumbling Tumbleweeds. This song was written by one of the group's founding members, Bob Nolan. I feel that Bob Nolan after gets overlooked when music fans talk about the great songwriters, but his talent is on full display in this song. The lyrics are sheer poetry and paint a vivid and beautiful picture in the minds of anyone who takes time to listen to them and the melody is haunting and completely timeless. This song was originally recorded in 1934, but took on even more fame when it was the title song of a Gene Autry movie a year later. Included in this post is the original 1934 recording. This is followed by The Statler Brothers with Just a Little Talk With Jesus. This song was written by Rev. Cleavant Derricks, who served as a pastor of a small town African-American church in Alabama. During the great depression the church needed hymnals but couldn't quite afford them. Cleavant contacted a publishing company (Stamps-Baxter) with some hymns he had written in hopes that he could make enough money to afford hymnals for his church. The company did not want most of these song but took interest in this song. It is said he recieved fifty hymnals in exchange for the rights for this song. The company published this song in 1936 and it has gone on to become a gospel favorite of many music fans. Today's musical selection ends with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with a song Dale wrote herself, The Bible Tells Me So.
